Right. This one’s a bit different. Most of my cakes are pink, colourful, fun. But sometimes you need something… darker. Elegant. A bit mysterious. Black cake? Sounds strange, I know. But trust me – it works. Someone asked me a while back: “can you do a black cake for my 30th birthday? Goth theme. Not tacky. Just black and elegant.” I said yeah, course. Made a round cake, black buttercream (took ages to get the colour right without it tasting weird), and a simple black satin ribbon round the middle. She loved it. Said it was “moody and beautiful”. That’s high praise. So here it is: Black Ribbon Cake – available at our Bromley bakery. It’s a round cake, about 7 or 8 inches. Feeds 6–10 people. Perfect for a gothic birthday, Halloween party, milestone 30th or 40th, or anyone who loves black. What’s in it? Sponge – vanilla, chocolate, or red velvet. Your choice. Our proper ones. Buttercream – black. Proper black. Not grey. Took me a while to figure out how to do it without using loads of food colouring (which can taste bitter). I use a special black cocoa powder. Tastes like dark chocolate, looks like night. The ribbon – a black satin ribbon tied round the middle. Not edible. You take it off before cutting. But it makes the cake look proper. On top – simple. Maybe a few black sprinkles or a single sugar flower in deep red or white. Nothing fussy. It’s elegant. It’s moody. It’s for people who aren’t afraid of dark colours. Who buys this? Gothic birthday cake – 18th, 21st, 30th, 40th. Any age where you want to make a statement. Halloween cake – very popular in October. Black and white themed party – works for anniversaries, engagement parties. Milestone birthday cake – when you want something different from pastel pinks. Honestly? People who are tired of boring white cakes. This one gets noticed. Can I get a different colour ribbon? Yeah. You want black cake with a red ribbon? Silver? White? Just tell me. Can I add a message or age? Course. Piped in white, silver, or gold on top or on the side. Different flavour?Yeah. Lemon, strawberry, caramel – whatever. Just ask. The black buttercream works with most things. How much notice? Few days if you can. The black buttercream takes a bit longer to mix. Order online or message me – I’ll be honest. Collection or delivery? Collect from our Bromley shop or local delivery if you're nearby. One thing to mention… The black buttercream might stain your fingers a tiny bit if you touch it a lot. But it washes off. Also the satin ribbon is not edible – take it off before cutting. Don’t eat the ribbon. Shouldn’t have to say that but here we are. Right. That’s the Black Ribbon one done. For the ones who know that black is beautiful too.
