Black fur reached North American wolves from an unexpected direction. The variant responsible passed from early domestic dogs into wild packs thousands of years ago, and it took hold most strongly in forested country, where a dark coat suits timber and shadow. A head built from strands The design is a single wolf head in profile, facing right and filled solid black. The style is tribal: mane, brow and cheek are made of tapering strands that curl back on themselves like flame, each one narrowing to a point. The eye and the inner ear are left open so the wall carries the highlights, and a small curl of breath escapes the parted mouth, the one loose element in an otherwise tightly bound shape. Dark coats in the wild In Yellowstone roughly half the wolves are black, a proportion unmatched on the open tundra further north. The trait holds under forest cover and thins across treeless ground, which is why coat colour maps so closely onto habitat. A longer account sits in the black wolf portrait.
