A large vigorous shrub from Europe and Asia, growing 5m (16 ft) high in 10 years. It produces distinctive bladder-like papery seed pods in late summer, that have edible seeds 1 cm across tasting rather like pistachio nuts. Likes a moist soil and thrives in full shade to partial shade, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens and shaded areas. It may fruit better with more sunlight.
