The colour can range from a light baby blue to a deep indigo that looks like silky cobalt. The name was derived from the Greek word kyanos, which means “dark blue.” Contrary to common perception, kyanite is not always blue; it may also be white, pink, grey, yellow, or orange. Kyanite is repeatedly detected in the Manhattan schist from the extreme pressure of two land masses merging to form the supercontinent (Pangaea) around 300 million years ago.
