The Bluefin Killifish, scientifically known as Lucania goodei, is a small, colorful species native to the southeastern United States, especially Florida. It inhabits slow-moving streams, ponds, and swamps, often among dense vegetation near the surface. It is valued in the aquarium hobby for its vibrant coloration, adaptability, and peaceful nature, making it a good candidate for native biotope aquariums. Adult Bluefin Killifish typically reach about 1.5 to 2 inches (3.5 to 5 cm) in length. Males are more colorful, with bright blue fins edged in black and often reddish or yellowish highlights on the body. Females are less striking, with a silvery appearance and clear fins, though they sometimes show faint spotting. Both sexes have a slim, streamlined body shape adapted for surface and midwater swimming. A tank of at least 10 to 15 gallons is recommended for a small group. Bluefin Killifish thrive in heavily planted aquariums with floating vegetation and gentle water flow. A sandy or fine gravel substrate, combined with driftwood and leafy cover, will replicate their natural environment and help them feel secure. Water parameters should include a temperature range of 68 to 77°F (20 to 25°C), a pH between 6.5 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. They are hardy and tolerant of a range of conditions but show their best coloration in stable, clean water. Feeding Lucania goodei is simple. They are omnivorous micropredators and readily accept high-quality flakes, micro pellets, and live or frozen foods such as daphnia, cyclops, brine shrimp, and bloodworms. A varied diet helps enhance their vivid fin colors and overall vitality. Bluefin Killifish are peaceful and do well with other small, non-aggressive community fish. They can also be kept in species-only aquariums or in native setups with species such as least killifish, pygmy sunfish, or small shiners. Avoid large or predatory tankmates. Breeding is straightforward. Males display their fins to court females, and eggs are scattered among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. The eggs hatch in about a week, and fry can be raised on infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.
