BOA Shrimp (Boa Caridina) are a high-end Taiwan Bee–type Caridina shrimp, prized for their bold, exotic patterns and deep, contrasting metallic colors. They are considered one of the most premium and visually striking varieties in the aquarium hobby — a true collector's shrimp that commands attention in any dedicated Caridina tank. What Makes BOA Special? BOA Caridina stand apart from standard Taiwan Bee varieties through their exceptional pattern intensity and color depth. Each shrimp displays a unique combination of opaque banding and metallic sheen, making no two individuals identical. Their rarity and visual impact make them a centrepiece species — not just a tank inhabitant, but a living work of art. Water Parameters TDS: 100–130 pH: 5.5–5.8 GH: 4–5 KH: 0–1 Temperature: 22–23 °C BOA Caridina require soft, acidic water — the same parameters as Crystal Red, Crystal Black, and other Taiwan Bee shrimp. Use an active substrate (such as ADA Amazonia or similar) to maintain stable pH and KH. RO water remineralised with a Caridina-specific mineral salt is strongly recommended. Tank Setup Tank size: 20 L minimum; 30–60 L ideal for a colony Substrate: active buffering substrate (essential for pH stability) Filtration: sponge filter or pre-filtered inlet — BOA fry are tiny and easily lost in standard filters Plants: mosses, Bucephalandra, and other low-light epiphytes provide biofilm grazing surfaces and shelter Hardscape: driftwood and leaf litter (Indian almond, oak) help lower pH naturally and encourage foraging behaviour Lighting: low to medium; avoid intense light that stresses shrimp Feeding BOA Caridina are omnivores that thrive on a varied, high-quality diet. Feed sparingly — overfeeding is the most common cause of water quality issues in shrimp tanks. Daily staple: a premium Caridina-formulated powder or granule food Protein supplement: high-protein foods 2–3× per week to support moulting and breeding Biofilm: mosses and driftwood provide constant natural grazing between feedings Vegetables: blanched spinach, zucchini, or nettle leaves as an occasional treat Feeding frequency: once daily; remove uneaten food after 2–3 hours Compatibility Shrimp: keep with other Taiwan Bee Caridina varieties (Crystal Red, Crystal Black, Panda) — do not mix with Neocaridina, as water parameters are incompatible Fish: BOA are best kept in a species-only or shrimp-only tank; avoid any fish that may predate on shrimp or fry Plants: fully compatible with all aquatic plants; mosses and Bucephalandra are ideal companions Why Suksai Aquatic?
