A sterling silver and handmade glass 'port' side ships lantern table lighter. This fabulous looking desk, or table lighter, is made to look exactly like a lantern that was hung on the side of a ship, to the left, port side, to allow other ships to understand which direction the ship is traveling and how wide it is. This type of piece is akin to an oil burning lamp. This would be lit while entertaining guests in a smoking room of the house. It would be lit and left to burn until it was no longer needed. It would be extinguished by simply closing the hinged lid, this starving the flame of oxygen. The piece was made in Birmingham, England, in 1899 by Cohen & Charles. The lamp is in superb condition, with clean and crisp hallmarks throughout, the hand engraved "Port" plaque intact, and fully functional, just requiring lighter fluid. Show more
