Marley fronted the Jamaican Ska, Rocksteady & Reggae bands The Wailers (1963-1974) & later Bob Marley & The Wailers (1974-1981) as a rhythm guitarist & lead vocalist. He remains the most well-known & influential of the reggae stars, along with fellow stars Peter Tosh & Jimmy Cliff. Marley brought the genre of reggae to the Western pop-mainstream, & in the process globalized interest in its’ accompanying spiritualist religion of Rastafarianism.His music is heavily influenced by the social issues of the Caribbean, particularly Jamaica. He often exhibited an understanding of the nature & history of colonialism. His songs speak of resisting the evil of ‘Babylon’ (the materialist West), & of redemption, love & freedom. He has been dubbed the Third World’s first superstar.
