Orphaned as a young teenager, he was sent from New Jersey to Los Angeles to live with relatives, placing him in South Central during a period when gangs and street violence were becoming increasingly difficult to avoid. Black Metal Roots: Body Count grew out of Ice-T's friendship with guitarist Ernie C, whom he had known since their school days. Ice-T has repeatedly pointed out that Black kids in Los Angeles were listening to Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and punk alongside funk and hip-hop, and Body Count was created partly to challenge the idea that heavy metal somehow belonged to only one racial audience. National Controversy: “Cop Killer” became one of the most politically explosive songs of the early 1990s. Police organizations organized boycotts, President George H.W. Bush publicly criticized the record, and Time Warner came under enormous pressure to remove it.
