WHY STENCIL?Stenciling offers a creative, affordable, and accessible way to enhance walls, furniture, and décor with personalized designs. It allows you to add intricate patterns and artistic detail without the need for advanced painting skills or expensive materials. Whether you're updating a feature wall, upcycling old furniture, or adding accents to home décor, stenciling gives you complete control over color, placement, and style. Reusable stencils make it easy to repeat designs consistently, making the process efficient and cost-effective. It's a versatile technique that empowers DIYers to express their creativity while achieving professional-looking results. HOW TO STENCIL A WALL (using a top edging stencil) 1) Start centrally at the top of your wall using the top edging stencil. 2) Position the stencil in place using some decorators tape. 3) If only stencilling one colour, use a small dense foam roller to apply the paint. If stencilling several colours, use several sponge dabbers or stencil brushes, one for each colour. See LESS IS MORE! below for more tips on how to apply the paint. 4) Realign the stencil. There are repeat parts of the pattern on the left and right sides of the stencil. Overlay these repeat markers over previously painted pattern to ensure you get a nice pattern repeat. 5) Repeat step 4 across the width of the top of your wall. Leave the edges of the wall till last. 6) For the edges we find it useful to place some decorator's tape all the way around the edge of the wall, about 5-10mm (3/8") in from the edge. Bend the stencil into the edges and secure in place. You may need to use your fingers to flatten the stencil in places whilst you use a stencil brush or sponge dabber to apply paint. Stencil up to the tape, this will help you create a nice clean straight finished edge. 7) Using the main stencil you will now fill the pattern across the whole wall. Align the stencil to the previously painted top edge and follow steps 2-6 above. 7) Once you have covered the whole wall you can finally remove the tape. Voila, your stencilled feature wall is now finished! LESS IS MORE!The biggest mistake most people make when stenciling is using too much paint. This will inevitably lead to paint bleeding underneath the stencil and cause blurry edges. You will be surprised how little paint is actually needed! Don't overload paint onto the brush, sponge or roller. Rub most of the paint off onto a piece of card before applying to the stencil. Paint or roll in from the edges of the stencil so you don't push paint underneath. And do practice first on some spare paper or card before attempting your project.
