Individual fronds remain small, but established rhizomes gradually produce numerous leaves, eventually creating dense patches of intricate green foliage. This extremely restrained scale is one of its greatest strengths in a vivarium. Many ferns sold as "miniature" simply begin small and eventually become unsuitable for compact enclosures. High atmospheric humidity is strongly beneficial, particularly while newly planted specimens are establishing, but gentle airflow should accompany consistently humid conditions. Mini Bolbitis can also be grown submerged, which explains its presence in the aquarium trade, but terrarium and paludarium culture are particularly well suited to this fern. Submerged growth is extremely slow and may differ noticeably in form from emersed foliage. Above water in a humid environment, plants can develop the dense, finely divided fronds that make the species especially desirable. Mature emersed leaves may also produce adventitious plantlets, providing an additional method of vegetative propagation. Combined with gradual rhizome expansion, this allows an established specimen to slowly develop into a colony rather than remaining a single isolated crown. In the Vivarium Bolbitis difformis 'Mini' is an outstanding choice for nano vivariums, dart frog terrariums, paludariums, and detailed tropical landscapes. Its extremely small foliage allows it to be positioned in areas where conventional ferns would quickly become disproportionate.
