A Complete Cow x Pickled Compost Bone Char Bone Char (or Bio Char) is a mineral-rich soil amendment created through a collaboration between A Complete Cow and Pickled Compost. Made from repurposed 'Complete Cow' bones, it transforms what would otherwise be waste into a stable form of carbon that supports healthy, living soils. The bones are heated in a low-oxygen environment to create a porous char that retains valuable minerals — particularly calcium and phosphorus. These nutrients play an important role in plant growth, root development, and long-term soil fertility. Bone Char works best when it becomes inoculated with beneficial microbes, (such as your Bokashi or 'Pickled Compost' microbes) which activate the char and help integrate it into the soil ecosystem. How to use: Add a handful of Bone Char to your Pickled Compost (Bokashi) bucket when adding food scraps. During the fermentation process, beneficial microbes inoculate the char, allowing it to become biologically active before being added to soil. Benefits: Helps manage odours in your Bokashi bucket Provides a slow-release source of calcium and phosphorus Improves soil structure, as well as nutrient retention and water holding capacity for your soil. Supports beneficial soil microbes by providing a porous habitat Long-lasting, stable form of soil carbon Diverts bones from waste streams and returns nutrients to the land Once the Bokashi material is buried or added to soil, the microbe-inoculated Bone Char helps build fertile, resilient soil that can support healthy food production.
