This North American native has traditionally been used medicinally in many ways. It grows in upright clumps with fuzzy, umbel-like clusters of white flowers. The stem appears to be growing through the center of the long, tapered leaves, hence the Latin name Eupatorium perfoliatum. This suggested to herbalists of the past that the plant would be useful in setting bones, so its leaves were wrapped with bandages around splints. However, it was mainly used as a sweat-inducer and fever-breaker. Dried leaves and flowers can be made into a tea or tincture to treat colds.
