The rock itself is often a brown sedimentary matrix rock that has iron content. These iron layers form the host rock that the opal forms into. The opal is the layer of colorful or milky looking blue, green, red and purple that form inside the “boulder” host rock. Fire opal is opal that has a fiery flash of color, often with reds, greens, blues, and oranges. It is formed similar to boulder opal, but is often cut with less of the sedimentary matrix rock.
