Bound to the Loop shows a staircase that should not exist. It folds back into itself, rising and falling in the same breath, a structure that offers no beginning and no end. Somewh ere within it, a lone figure climbs. The same figure descends. Both are true at once.The image does not appear through paint or print. It is revealed through controlled scratches cut into acrylic glass, where only the edges of the steps and the outline of the figure catch the light against absolute blackness. No paint. No print. No ink. What you see exists because the surface has been altered, not built upon.As light moves across the work, the staircase shifts between clarity and shadow. At one angle the steps vanish into darkness, at another the whole structure snaps into focus, as if the loop itself is breathing. From a distance the piece reads as a single monumental gesture. Up close, it dissolves into a quiet field of controlled surface damage, countless individual marks working together to hold one impossible shape.The staircase is a familiar symbol of effort and progress, yet here it grants neither. The figure moves constantly and arrives nowhere, caught in a loop that asks nothing of destination and everything of motion. It is a quiet study of persistence without resolution, of being bound to a process rather than a result.This work continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print.
