Called by various common names; Queensland Bottle Tree, Narrow-leaf Bottle Tree are the most commonly used. A pachycaul succulent from Australia, with the look of a Baobab tree when mature. They can grow to massive size, sixty feet tall or more with a bottle-shaped trunk up to six feet thick. Such specimens are ancient. They are deciduous in the dry season and if no dry season is experienced, then tend not to lose their leaves. The trunk is of course the main attraction, but the foliage crown is impressive. The leaves are compound and narrow, but morph to single, broader leaves as the tree matures. A choice landscape plant in areas that don’t drop much below freezing for long periods or as a potted specimen. The more mature tree in the photo is in the Sydney Botanical Gardens.
