Breckland's sandy heathland supports only what can survive thin, dry soil, gorse and heather scattered sparsely rather than carpeting the ground, leaving as much pale earth showing as scrub. This rug holds that same sparseness: a deep oat field marked by scattered horizontal strokes in grey, terracotta, and pale gold, the gaps between marks as deliberate as the marks themselves. Hand-tufted by the weavers of Jaipur, the wool lifts each stroke in flat colour against the warm tonal ground, with no carved relief doing any of the contrast's work. Beneath a Georgian cornice or bare concrete, the restraint reads as considered rather than empty. In a Mayfair study, it brings something of that thin, resilient heathland indoors. Show more
