Shell Oil launched one of its most successful ad campaigns, "Visit Britain", during the 1930s. This poster is from that series. The goal of these advertisements was to promote driv ing as a leisure pursuit which allowed drivers to sightsee around the British Isles while enjoying a drive - and by extension, filling their tanks with Shell brand petrol. Graham Sutherland's abstracted interpretation of Brimham Rock in Yorkshire is similar in style to surrealist landscapes of the period. We felt it right to present this extremely rare lithographic poster without restoration. It could be completely restored if required. Show more
