The tarmac railway path will take you away from the city centre and through the Staple Hill Tunnel, about one mile in length and which is lit from 5am to 8.30pm. It then reaches the outskirts of Bristol before heading south to meet the River Avon. The scenic path along the river is a mix of meadows and woodland with the river never far away. The path varies in quality and sections can be muddy in the wet. Part way down the river the course passes Hanham Lock where a couple of pubs sit on the riverbank . There is an untimed section here should you want to stop for refreshments without a time penalty. The path continues to meander and the surroundings becomes more urbanised until eventually you are in the back in the bustle of the city centre. If you love rivers and old railway paths, this has to be a route for your bucket list - and it's easy to get to. Run the route, earn your medal, and sit back with the unbeatable satisfaction of job well done on this future classic route.
