Britney Spears, New Orleans LA, 1999. Shooting Britney in her hometown, at just 16, was meeting her at the crossroads of innocence and iconography. This sweet Southern girl with the unmistakable voice—and the star power to redefine pop music. We were at her childhood home, her sister on the other end of the porch and parents in the living room. She needed space to really be herself, away from the familial chaos, so we walked through her neighborhood into the little town. We passed this schoolbus, and the duality was impossible to ignore. A playful teenager, full of youthful energy, yet exuding this undeniable confidence—her natural charisma hinting at the icon she’d become—and this unreleased photo of Britney encapsulates it perfectly. Her raw magnetism made every frame come alive. She had this incredible ability to play both roles—innocent and provocative—all while staying true to herself. Britney and I connected in a way that made this shoot so special—she was a star, but also just a girl from Louisiana, figuring out who she was becoming. It’s incredible to reflect on her journey and the wild ride it’s been watching her story unfold. Happy Birthday Britney.
