Wood would not be the best choice for removing rocks, very compacted ground or for virgin soil. While ash wood has the highest breaking strength, a wood handle can break largely because you have a significant amount of leverage with a two-handle broad fork and the forged tines will not bend. Bottom Steel version is heavier at 20.5 lbs. but you will not break the steel handle. Steel is a good choice for rocky or hard compacted ground.
