DESCRIPTION Brown Sugar is the debut album by D’Angelo, released on July 3, 1995 through EMI Records and Cooltempo Records. It’s widely regarded as one of the cornerstones of the neo-soul movement, a style that emerged in the 1990s blending classic soul and funk with the sensibilities of modern hip-hop and R&B. Alongside artists like Erykah Badu, Maxwell, and Lauryn Hill, D’Angelo helped define a sound that stood apart from the highly polished, synthetic R&B that dominated the early decade—favoring warmth, live instrumentation, and emotional depth.At the time of the album’s release, D’Angelo—whose real name is Michael Archer—was only 21 years old.
