Browne Protein V4: More control, more flexibility, same unmistakable character The Browne Protein V4 builds on one of the most popular dual overdrives of the past several years, adding greater tonal control and flexibility while preserving the character that made the original Protein so successful. Originally developed through a collaboration between David Brown and guitarist/producer Adam Sniegowski, the Protein was designed around a simple idea: create a versatile overdrive that delivers consistently great results across different guitars, amplifiers and backlines. The Blue side takes inspiration from the classic BluesBreaker-style circuit, delivering warm, open overdrive with excellent touch sensitivity and a natural, amp-like response. For V4, Browne refined the tone circuit and increased the available output while adding a three-position Hi-Cut switch for greater control over the top end. The Green side draws from the distinctive Nashville-style overdrive associated with the Nobels ODR-1. In V4, Browne revoiced the gain control for a smoother sweep, reshaped the midrange for greater presence and tightened the low end for improved definition. The result is a rich, punchy overdrive with plenty of low-mid body without becoming muddy. Each side works beautifully on its own, but stacking the Green side into the Blue creates a third distinct voice with additional gain, sustain and harmonic richness. The stacked sound remains clear and articulate, making it equally useful for saturated rhythm sounds and bigger lead tones. V4 also introduces three internal switches for the Green side. Low Cut tightens the bass response, Heavy Clipping adds more bite and breakup, and Asymmetrical Clipping introduces additional harmonic complexity and a rawer character. Together with the external Hi-Cut control on the Blue side, these additions make it considerably easier to tailor the Protein to different guitars, amplifiers and playing styles. From subtle breakup and open, touch-sensitive drive to thicker Nashville-style overdrive and stacked lead tones, the Protein V4 remains remarkably straightforward to use while offering considerably more control than previous versions.
