Chinese American icon Bruce Lee was born in San Francisco and raised in Hong Kong. He went on to create his own martial art, Jeet Kune Do, which emphasized flexibility, efficiency, and adaptability—in both combat and everyday life. Widely considered the most influential martial artist of all time, Lee’s path to success was paved with obstacles. In Hollywood, he faced intense discrimination, struggling to land roles due to his race and appearance. Disillusioned, he returned to Hong Kong, where he starred in three films that shattered box office records and revolutionized martial arts cinema. His success overseas caught Hollywood’s attention, leading to Enter the Dragon, a groundbreaking co-production between Hollywood and Hong Kong. Tragically, Lee died in 1973 before the film’s release. It went on to become the highest-grossing film of that year. Beyond the screen, Bruce Lee broke racial barriers as one of the first Asian American martial arts instructors to openly teach students of all backgrounds.
