Quick Facts: ABV: 40% | Origin: Cognac Region, France | VSOP (Aged 4 Years) | Distillery: Distilleries de Matha Production & Heritage Distilleries de Matha has been producing spirits since 1889 and has grown into one of the largest spirits producers in France. The facility sits within the designated Cognac production area, giving it direct access to the white grape varieties traditional to the region's brandy-making heritage. Brunel VSOP is distilled from these white cognac grapes and matured for a minimum of four years in French oak barrels, a process that develops the deep golden-amber color and layered aromatics the VSOP designation demands. Tasting Notes Aroma: The nose opens with chocolate and vanilla, followed by waves of dried fruit, honey, and toasted nuts. Subtle oak undertones round out the bouquet as the brandy breathes. Taste: On the palate, sweet dried fruit arrives first, supported by a mid-palate of warm vanilla and honey. Nutty nuances emerge as the brandy develops, with French oak adding gentle structure and a measured tannic grip. The mouthfeel is smooth and medium-bodied, appropriate for the four years of barrel aging. Finish: The finish is moderate in length with lingering notes of toasted nuts and dried fruit. A whisper of vanilla and oak tannin fades gradually, leaving a clean, warm close. How to Drink Brunel VSOP Neat in a tulip-shaped glass at room temperature is the most direct way to appreciate the dried fruit and vanilla character; a single ice cube can open up the nutty nuances further. The 1.75L format makes this an especially practical bottle for cocktail service. Sidecar: The vanilla and dried fruit notes complement Cointreau and fresh lemon juice without getting lost in the mix. Brandy Old Fashioned: The oak-aged complexity holds up well with a sugar cube, Angostura bitters, and an orange twist. French Connection: A simple equal-parts pour with amaretto plays directly into the existing nutty and vanilla profile. The 1.75L format makes it one of the more practical choices for anyone who reaches for brandy regularly, whether neat after dinner or behind a home bar.
