Mulching your plants and garden beds results in: Less weeds Cooler soil and roots More microbes and a healthier soil More nutrients as mulch breaks down A more beautiful and maintained looking landscape Best practices when mulching: Maintain mulch at 3-4" thick for best weed coverage Do not build up mulch around tree trunks, plant stems, and over top of perennials. Burying plants too deeply in mulch (or soil) causes slow and long term decline. It's best to take care of bed maintenance and planting before mulching. This includes edging, weeding, trimming and debris removal. Mulch is usually the last step in preparing the beds. Mulch Coverage Mulch will cover a different amount of area depending on how thick it is spread (thinner goes farther, thicker less) and how many plants are in the beds (don't bury plants in mulch and you'll use less) Under most circumstances 1 cubic yard of mulch will cover: 100 sq.ft.
