Did you know that butterflies don’t actually have color in their wings? Their wings are covered in tiny, overlapping scales — and it’s the structure of those scales that bends and reflects light, creating their characteristic iridescence. Just like in nature, where metamorphosis turns something fragile into something remarkable, these butterflies are a reminder of how powerful transformation can be. Hang from the ceiling on a thin nylon line, floating softly in the air — a perfect focal point in a window, in your Christmas tree, or anywhere you want a piece that draws the eye. I chose to light these in shifting tones because it reflects nature so beautifully. You can order one — or build your own little swarm. These are made from brass, but they can also be created in steel.The making of a sculptureI shape each sculpture by hand, using the pressure and strength of my hands to bend, fold, and stretch the mesh into its form. I use a few simple tools to assist me. With a ball-peen hammer, I create depth and dimension by stretching the mesh, while a pointed plier allows me to define movements by folding and bending the mesh in the right direction, creating contrasts and silhouette lines.
