(Juglans cinerea) The butternut tree is a very hardy deciduous tree native to North America, known for its unique, sweet, and buttery flavored nuts. The nuts are encased in a green husk and have a hard, outer shell that can prove tough to crack. Butternut trees can grow to be quite large, reaching heights of 60-80 feet. They have a broad, spreading canopy that provides ample. The bark of a butternut tree is distinctive, with deep, furrowed ridges. Butternut leaves are large and compound, with leaflets arranged in pairs. They turn a beautiful yellow color in the fall. They prefer moist, well-drained soil.
