The origins of the coat commonly known as the "p-coat" are believed to date back to the 18th century. The name itself is derived from the Dutch term "Pijekker", which was later anglicized-"Pi" referring to coarse wool fabric and "jekker" meaning jacket. While several European military forces have adopted similar styles over the years, this particular P-Coat is based on the model used by the U.S. Navy for non-commissioned officers in the 1910s. One of the defining characteristics of the 1910s U.S. Navy P-Coat is its thick, high-density melton wool construction providing excellent insulation against harsh maritime conditions. Another signature detail is the anchor buttons engraved with thirteen stars, a reference to the original thirteen states of the Union when the United States declared independence in 1777.
