Before it was the protected natural oasis that it is today, Prince William Forest Park in Northern Virginia was home for thousands of years to Native Americans. The forest was esta blished as a children's relief camp in 1936 under the name of Chopawamsic Recreation Area, Chopawamsic meaning "by the small isolated lodge" in the ancient Algonquian language.
