Bernard Dufour was a French artist known for his Sapphic paintings of female figures. He studied art at the University of Heidelberg before the German occupation of Paris in World War II, where he was forced in war labor. After the war, Dufour continued his art career, staging two successful solo shows as well as participating in the second Documenta exhibition. He held many solo exhibitions during the late 1940s and early 1950s at notable art establishments such as Galerie Maeght and the Jeanne Bucher gallery. He collaborated with many writers, including René de Solier, whose poems accompany Dufour’s original etching featured in our collection. Later in his career, he moved away from abstraction, finding a personal and intimate language in figurative painting. This later work is characterized by intense self-portraits, mournful figures, and erotic nudes. It was also during this latter chapter that Dufour began working in photography as well as producing several volumes of writing on art and his own memoirs.
