Mei Qing Choi Brassica rapa chinensis. Pronounced "may-ching-choi." This hybrid Shanghai pac choi is tender, sweet, and crunchy. Short, compact plants are slow to bolt, but also cold-tolerant, for surprisingly long harvest periods. Mei Qing Choi pac choi seeds grow uniformly, with pale green petioles, and lovely, rounded, flat leaves. Perfect for early spring to late fall, and will overwinter with some protection. The secret to success with pac choi is to monitor your crop closely, because the plants can "bolt." This means that at a certain point in its growth season, the plant will send up a flower stock in order for pollination and seed production. This process is incredibly fast with pac choi plants, and can take only two days. Once the flowering process begins, the leaves lose much of their appealing taste and texture. It's best to sow numerous short rows of pac choi at two week intervals, so the whole crop does not mature all at once. Matures in 40 days. (Hybrid seeds) Yu Tsai Sum Brassica rapa var. chinensis. Yu Tsai Sum is a type of choi sum. This summer crop is also known as Yu Choi. Grown for tender flower bud stalks (yellow flowers) and glossy, bright green leaves, it is mild and sweet when cooked briefly. Stems will be 0.5-1cm (.25") thick if grown and watered well. This variety was tops in our trials for both taste and texture. For large plants, sow in rows 30-45cm (12-18") apart. Cut the flower bud stalk with a few leaves - new shoots will grow from a leaf axil. Plant Yu Tsai Sum seeds in early summer, up to 6 weeks before frost. Early spring plantings may bolt. Matures in 40-60 days. (Open-pollinated seeds) Jade Spring Brassica rapa var. chinensis. Jade Spring choi sum seeds produce a short season, fast-growing hybrid variety of Yu Tsai Sum (or Choi Sum) that produces raw stems with the texture of lightly steamed asparagus, with a sweet, mild taste. Stems will be 5mm - 1cm thick if grown and watered well. Early spring plantings may bolt. The incredible flavour will have you eating it raw, straight out of the garden, before it can be cut for stir-fries, salads, or soups. The plants in our trials have been consistently uniform and show few signs of damage from pests or disease. Matures in 35-45 days. (Hybrid seeds) SUI CHOI. Wa Wa Sai cabbage seeds produce classic miniature napa cabbages or sui choi. The heads weigh approximately 500g (1 lb) each from spring or autumn sowing. And they are ready to harvest just 60 days from transplanting. Space plants around 20-30 cm (8-12") apart in the row. They have a lovely sweet flavour and crisp texture that works so well with noodle dishes. Sui choi is dramatically reduced in volume when cooked. Remove the loose outer wrapper leaves to reveal a tightly packed urn-like oblong napa cabbage within. This is an excellent choice for making kimchi at home. Wa Wa Sai has high resistance to clubroot. Matures in 60 days. (Hybrid seeds) Toy Choy F1 Brassica oleraceae var. chinensis. This miniature pac choi can be picked at the "single serving" size. Dark green leaves and glistening white stems mark Toy Choy pac choi seeds as a standout among the many Chinese vegetables that grow so well in coastal gardens. You can use these delicacies gently braised and served whole to appreciate the mild flavour and graceful appearance. They add flavour and crunch to stir-fries, soups, and noodle dishes. Serve separate from the main course in the traditional manner so that the cooked greens can be appreciated on their own. This is a very good example of a crop you should sow a little at a time, over several weeks so that the whole crop does not mature at once. Matures in 30-50 days. (Hybrid seeds) China Express SUI CHOI. Brassica rapa var. pekinesis. These sweet, crisp napa cabbages are ideal for salads and a mainstay of the stir-fry. Big, broad, barrel-shaped, and pale-green heads are tightly packed and 0.6-2.2kg (11/2-5lb) after trimming. China Express Cabbage seeds have good bolt resistance and excellent uniformity. For full-sized heads sow in summer with the last planting 10 weeks before frost. Established plants are vigorous and will stand in the garden until freezes get severe. However, seedlings will bolt if they are exposed to temperatures below 10°C (50°F) for more than 2 weeks; so protect early spring planting with cloche covers. Matures in 65-80 days. (Hybrid seeds) Tiara SUMMER HARVEST. Expect early and extra tender leaves from Tiara cabbage seeds. An improved early first cabbage with wonderful hybrid uniformity and excellent holding ability. Tiara supports a dense cabbage head with a short internal core. This cabbage holds well in the field. Tiara cabbage is green, medium sized, with thin, tender leaves that would make a perfect addition to your coleslaw or salad. This may be one of the best cabbage varieties for sauerkraut. These seeds are coated with an inert, organically certified layer which helps to minimize clumping in storage and seed sowing machines. The coating is approved by organic certifiers in Canada, the US, EU, and Japan. Matures in 45 days. (Hybrid seeds) How to Grow 300 seed/gram. Sow seed indoors in a soil-less mix 5 weeks before last frost date. Sow seed 6 mm (1/4″) deep and keep at 20 C (70 F) for the 7-10 day germination period. Grow on at a slightly cooler temperature then harden off and plant outside in late May. Space plants 45 cm (18″) apart in rows with the rows 75 cm (30″) apart.
