The procedure carries risk for both mother and child and is carried out if vaginal birth is considered too dangerous, for example if the baby is in breach position, if the mother is suffering from pre-eclampsia or if the baby is not getting enough oxygen or nutrients. Sometimes a caesarean section is planned in advance (normally for the 38th week of pregnancy) but it is also done in cases of emergency. Most caesarean sections are carried out using epidural or spinal anaesthetic, with the mother awake but pain-free, but in emergency situations the procedure is often done under general anaesthetic. The procedure usually last under an hour. Recovery in hospital is usually around 4 days, and full recovery can take six weeks or more.
