Geoppertia (Ghep-PER-tee-ah) makoyana, formerly classified as Calathea, “Peacock Calathea” is named so for the interesting leaf patterns that resemble a peacock appearance. While the top of the leaves have deep green and light green patterns and colors, the underside mimics the pattern with light green and burgundy! Geoppertia are members of the Marantaceae “Prayer Plant” Family and are native to the rainforest floors of Central and South America. This species does not necessarily fold it’s leaves like other Maranta, but they do move subtlety throughout the day with the movement of natural sunlight. GENERAL CARE Calathea prefer indirect light and watering when the soil begins to feel dry, with a very brief “dry-out” period between watering. Plant in a well-draining potting soil with adequate drainage. As forest floor jungle plants, Calathea grow best in higher humidity, so place near other plants, a humidifier, or in a well-lit bathroom or kitchen with higher moisture in the air. BONUS: Calathea are considered Pet-Friendly!
