Who it is forFor the high school grades in the title. This one assumes Pre-Calculus is done, here or anywhere else. Your student is ready if they are comfortable with functions, their graphs and basic trigonometry. It's the last math class we teach before college. If you're not sure where your student belongs, email [email protected] and we'll help you place them. What your child will actually doBuild the idea of a limit from tables and graphs before any formula. Find a derivative and explain it as a rate of change in a real situation. Work problems at the board and defend each step. Connect the graph of a function to the graph of its derivative. Take a short written check every few weeks. What they will be able to do by the endExplain what a limit is, using a table and a graph. Explain a derivative as a rate of change. Find the derivatives of simple functions with the basic rules. Interpret a derivative in a real situation. Explain their reasoning in writing. The shape of the session55 minutes, once a week, for eight meetings. No more than four children. Each session opens with a problem, moves to work at the board, and closes with a short check. Weekly work is set between sessions, because one hour a week cannot carry a full calculus course on its own. What you need to sendA notebook, pencils and a scientific calculator. Everything else is included this fall. The teacher sets any work at home. This class adds to your own math instruction at home and does not replace it.What comes homeEvery worked problem set and every written check, in your student's handwriting, with their written explanations. Over a quarter that is a substantial math record. How this fits your Virginia requirementsHexagon Academy does not issue grades, credits, transcripts or a diploma. Anything your child brings home from this class is yours to keep. Taking this class does not change what you file with your school division or when you file it. If you home instruct under Virginia's home instruction law, the notice of intent and any evidence of progress stay yours to file, on the dates that law sets. What this class is notIt does not carry a high school credit or appear on any transcript, because Hexagon Academy issues neither. If your student needs calculus on a transcript, that credit comes from you as the home instructor or from an accredited provider, not from us. It is not an AP course. On its own, one hour a week will not cover a year of calculus.
