The flag features a grizzly bear, which symbolizes strength and independence, and a red star, representing California’s short-lived status as a republic before joining the United States. The red stripe at the bottom of the flag symbolizes the struggle for freedom and represents California’s revolutionary spirit. The bear itself was modeled after a grizzly bear, once native to the state, emphasizing the wild and untamed character of California.
