Call for Clay catalogs the results of Downing’s “crowd-sourced clay” project. Through public open calls, Downing invited participants to send samples of foraged clay along with let ters describing the places where the clay was found. As a collection, the samples and letters demonstrate attentiveness toward handfulls of dirt that often go unoticed. This project was produced through Downing’s 2025 Exhibition Artist-in-Residence (ExAIR) at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in connection with the exhibition A Beautiful Experience: The Midwest Grotto Tradition.In the spirit of reciprocity, each participant in this project will receive a copy of this publication.
