Callibaetis – Cripple The Callibaetis Cripple is a highly effective mayfly pattern designed to imitate a Callibaetis that has become trapped in the surface film during emergence. U nable to fully hatch or take flight, crippled mayflies are easy targets for trout and are often preferred over healthy duns because they require far less effort to capture. This pattern excels during Callibaetis hatches on lakes, ponds, reservoirs, and tailwaters where trout become selective and focus on vulnerable insects. Its low-riding profile accurately mimics an emerging or struggling mayfly, making it an excellent choice whenever fish refuse standard dry flies. Experienced anglers know that when trout are feeding steadily but ignoring adult mayflies, switching to a cripple pattern can make all the difference.
