Camassia leichtlinii Type: Bulb · Family: Asparagaceae · Native Region: Pacific Northwest Great Camas is the larger growing (sometimes 4ft. tall!) variety of our region's most beloved wildflower genus, Camassia. Camas bulbs are a long used staple of indigenous diets from Vancouver Island down to the Sierras, but the Willamette Valley has been the Camas heartland since time immemorial. Camas bulbs are happiest in wet winter soil followed by summer dryness, making them excellent wet meadow statement plants. Camas are also suprisingly shade tolerant, but will only form hip-high camas communities with ample sun + moisture.
