Camellia hiemalis sasanqua Hiryu is a small evergreen shrub with elegant deep rosy red flowers blended with darker red at the edges. The vigorous camellia with its cup-shaped blooms with golden stamens help to brighten the garden from autumn to early winter. Ideal as a specimen tree, feature plant, or in groups with other camellias, Hiryu can be used as a hedge or screen and espalier. Mulch and water well, prune after flowering and fertilise in spring. Soil: Plant in a free draining soil which is medium to acidic pH, rich in organic matter. A potting mix rich in humus is ideal, added at the time of planting. Conditions: Sunny or partly shaded position with morning or afternoon sun. It can be grown throughout Australia and is tolerant of both heat and light frost, but may need protection in extreme situations, especially when young. Size: Height 3m x width 2m
