Shanghai. A massive anti-terrorism summit is underway and the city is on edge. Maria Osawa, a Japanese photojournalist, is caught in the middle of a violent incident on the streets and saved by Canaan — a young Middle Eastern mercenary with synesthesia, a neurological condition she uses as a combat ability, perceiving people and threats as fields of color that reveal intention and emotion instantly. The two have a history: Canaan rescued Maria once before during a massacre in the Middle East. Their reunion is complicated by the emergence of Alphard, a ruthless operative and Canaan's former sister-in-arms who now leads a terrorist organization called Snake — and by the Ua virus, a bioweapon that kills most people but transforms a rare few called Borners into beings with extraordinary and often lethal abilities. Hakko cannot speak above a whisper without her voice becoming a sonic weapon. Others manifest differently. Alphard wants to use the Borners, control the virus, and settle her account with Canaan personally. Canaan is a 13-episode action series produced by P.A. Works — their first television production — and directed by Masahiro Ando, the director of Sword of the Stranger. It is based on a bonus scenario created by TYPE-MOON co-founders Kinoko Nasu and Takashi Takeuchi for the visual novel 428: Fūsa Sareta Shibuya de, a Wii game that received a perfect 40/40 score from Famitsu — the first game to achieve that rating. The series features character design by Takashi Takeuchi himself and original character designs by TYPE-MOON. The score was composed by Masumi Ito. Originally released in North America by Sentai Filmworks as a combined DVD/Blu-ray collection on October 26, 2010; reissued as a Complete Blu-ray Collection on January 4, 2022. Subtitle only — no English dub was produced.
