Cannonball Chardonnay is a 100% Chardonnay from California's coastal vineyards, bottled at 13.5% ABV in a standard 750ml format. The 2022 vintage earned 90 points from Wine Enthusiast critic Tonya Pitts, who highlighted its sumptuous texture and layers of golden apple, pineapple, and baking spice. Quick Facts: ABV: 13.5% | Origin: California, USA | Varietal: 100% Chardonnay | Producer: Cannonball Wine Company Production & Heritage Cannonball Wine Company sources its Chardonnay from coastal sites across Sonoma, Monterey, Santa Barbara, and Mendocino Counties — regions prized for the cool marine influence that preserves natural acidity in white grapes. A defining choice in the vineyard is the use of Chardonnay clones prone to millerandage (known as "hens and chicks"), where berries on the same cluster vary considerably in size; the winemaking team finds this phenomenon contributes greater phenolic complexity and textural intrigue to the finished wine. In the cellar, 70% of the blend undergoes fermentation and aging in French oak barrels while the remaining 30% is fermented and aged exclusively in stainless steel, preserving bright fruit character. Monthly lees stirring integrates a nutty, creamy quality, and the final blend marries for several months before bottling. Early-morning harvesting and gentle fruit handling at every stage reinforce freshness. Tasting Notes Aroma: Yellow apple and Bosc pear lead, followed by tropical pineapple and a squeeze of fresh lemon. Underneath, toasty brioche and a whisper of white florals add aromatic depth. Taste: The entry is light and crisp, with Golden Delicious apple and white nectarine arriving first. The mid-palate builds toward tangy quince and spiced pear, laced with lemon zest and Key lime cream. Toasted pistachio and almond emerge at the peak, reflecting the French oak influence without overwhelming the fruit. Finish: Vanilla and meringue linger with elegance, trailing off into a clean, dry conclusion. The finish is moderate in length, leaving behind a subtle impression of lemon curd and toasted almond. How to Drink Cannonball Chardonnay This Chardonnay drinks well slightly chilled — around 50–55°F — which lets both the oak-driven richness and the stainless-steel-fermented brightness express themselves fully. It also holds its own in several classic wine-based cocktails: White Wine Spritzer: The crisp acidity and pear-apple fruit stand up well to soda water and a citrus twist without going flat. French 75 (wine variation): Swap Champagne for this Chardonnay; its brioche notes and creamy texture complement the lemon-gin base. Sangria Blanca: The tropical pineapple character and baking-spice undertones add complexity to a white sangria with stone fruit and fresh herbs. Best For Weeknight dinners where you want a balanced California white that over-delivers Hosting a wine-focused tasting comparing oak-fermented vs. stainless-steel Chardonnays Gifting a friend who enjoys fruit-forward California whites with moderate oak influence Pairing with a holiday roast chicken or Thanksgiving spread Frequently Asked Questions What does Cannonball Chardonnay taste like? It leads with golden apple, pineapple, and spiced pear, balanced by toasted almond, brioche, and a thread of lemon zest. The texture is creamy from lees stirring yet finishes clean and dry. How does Cannonball Chardonnay compare to Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay? Both are multi-region California Chardonnays that blend oak and fruit character, but Cannonball ferments 30% of its blend in stainless steel, which tends to give it a brighter, crisper profile. Kendall-Jackson Vintner's Reserve is barrel-fermented and generally leans slightly richer on the palate. Is Cannonball Chardonnay good for sipping on its own? Yes — the balance between creamy oak texture and coastal-sourced acidity makes it enjoyable without food, particularly when served lightly chilled around 50–55°F. Where is Cannonball Chardonnay made? It is produced by Cannonball Wine Company using fruit sourced from coastal vineyard sites across Sonoma, Monterey, Santa Barbara, and Mendocino Counties in California. What foods pair well with Cannonball Chardonnay? Roast chicken with herbs complements its brioche and apple notes. Grilled shrimp or lobster echoes its creamy texture. A pear-and-Gruyère salad mirrors the wine's fruit and nutty character. Mild, creamy cheeses like Brie or triple-cream pair naturally with the lees-driven mouthfeel. Pan-seared halibut with a lemon-butter sauce highlights its citrus undercurrent. What sizes does Cannonball Chardonnay come in? Cannonball Chardonnay is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle. Is Cannonball Chardonnay worth the price? It positions as a mid-range California Chardonnay that punches above its weight — the 90-point score from Wine Enthusiast and multi-county coastal sourcing place it in strong company for the category and price tier. Why Cannonball Chardonnay? What separates this wine from many California Chardonnays at its level is the deliberate use of millerandage-prone clones, a vineyard-driven decision that builds textural complexity before the wine ever reaches a barrel. The 70/30 split between French oak and stainless steel fermentation avoids the one-note butteriness that dominates lesser examples of the varietal, keeping fruit and acidity in clear focus. A 90-point nod from Wine Enthusiast on the 2022 vintage confirms the consistency the winemaking team has built across recent releases. For anyone seeking a coastal California Chardonnay that balances richness with restraint, this bottle delivers on both fronts.
