This natural design, known as sub-irrigation, can reduce water consumption by up to 80%, while significantly reducing daily watering requirements. We’ve found that the 5.5 gallon reservoir needs to be filled on average 8-12 times a season. We recommend monitoring the float gauge on the WaterStem at least once a week, and 2-3 times a week during extreme heat waves. The Self-Watering kit includes a WaterStem and float system, a foodsafe, waterproof liner, the 3” tall SIP insert, and an overflow water stem. With the SIP kit installed, the soil depth in each planter is 8". Cedar Finish Choosing the Raw Cedar will allow the Western Red Cedar to season uniquely and develop its own natural patina and character over time. Small cracks, silvering, knot holes and weathering are all part of this natural process. Choosing the premium exterior finishes adds aesthetic longevity to your planter. The finishes used are from OSMO, an environmentally friendly wood finish, safe for humans, animals, and plants. The natural oils enhance the character and tone of the wood. If your garden has one of the premium exterior finishes, you can either let it weather naturally, or refinish your garden every 2 years to keep it looking fresh.
