France lays in chaos after the defeat of Napoleon. The Duke of Corlaine and his henchman Count Villiers have taken control of the countryside - imprisoning anyone who questions the ir authority. Captain Scarlett, a soldier returning from the war, arrives to find his estate has been confiscated by the Count.
