Abalone Shells10 inches by 13 inchesCTB37 $115 We are pleased to offer these beautiful, originally hand-colored illustrations from this scarce first edition work, dated 1827, and p ublished by W. H. Lizars, engraver, D. Lizars, bookseller; London S. Highley, bookseller. Captain Brown was a well-known natural history scientist who held many memberships in scientific organizations in 19th century England including the Royal Physical Society, the Wernerian Natural History Society, and the Manchester Geological and Natural History Societies. He traveled extensively and drew his subjects from live specimens he found on his travels. The prints are ORIGINAL hand colored engravings from 1827 on high quality wove paper with strong plate marks, some with a J. Whatman, 1826 watermark. Each print measures approximately 10 inches wide by 13 inches long. The condition of the plates is excellent, with the paper being slightly creamy.
