Watercolour on paper, 1936. These are actually Fever Wagons – used first in the Boer War, or possibly even earlier in the Crimean War, and then shipped back to Newhaven, Sussex, an d parked at the chalk pits near Peggy Angus’s house ‘Furlongs’ (see ‘Furlongs’ print) where Ravilious was residing. Ravilious asked if he could purchase them, and subsequently made one into a bedroom and the other into a studio, where presumably this haunting work was painted.
