Continuing the Royal Australian Mint's tradition of commemorating important Australian sporting events the 2013-2014 Commonwealth Bank Ashes Series is commemorated with this 20c un circulated coin. The Ashes Series represents one of the world's greatest and longest-standing cricket rivalries - that between Australia and England. Scheduled alternately in the northern and southern hemisphere, the Ashes tradition was born in 1882 when Australia defeated England on home soil for the first time. A mock obituary appeared in the press the next day stating that English cricket had died, and that "the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia". Hence the name of the enduring series was born. Not until 1927 did a small terracotta urn allegedly containing the remains of a burnt cricket ball - a memento given to English captain Ivo Bligh in 1883 - become the symbol of the contest.
