Released in 1959, "Career" is a drama directed by Joseph Anthony and starring Anthony Franciosa, Dean Martin, Shirley MacLaine and Carolyn Jones. Franciosa plays Sam Lawson, an intensely ambitious actor determined to succeed on Broadway despite war, personal tragedy, political blacklisting and the compromises demanded by a life in show business. Adapted from James Lee’s stage play, the film offers a serious examination of ambition and the cost of professional success. It received three Academy Award nominations, while Franciosa won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama. The strong ensemble cast and backstage setting make it an intriguing portrait of American theatre and entertainment culture at the end of the 1950s.
