Carmelitana figs are covered in a yellow skin with some purple. The skin may show some purple or black “sugar spots” near the eye when ripe. Inside, the pulp can range from amber to peachy in color. The flavor is mildly sweet and includes notes of peach and berry. The trees will grow some 3-lobed leaves with a unique pattern on the edges of the leaves. Northern growers value Carmelitana for its cold hardiness and early ripening. This fig is suited to mid-Atlantic growers who experience a range of weather from hard frosts to wet and humid summers. Carmelitana is said to be adapted to difficult climates, and grows well in spite of it. While some have categorized Carmelitana as a Mt. Etna variety because of its ability to overwinter when planted directly in the ground, others who have grown the fig dispute that claim due to other characteristics of the fig. While it is known that Carmelitana is cold hardy, some have also pegged this as a good variety for growing in containers due to its dwarf size. Non-Rooted Cuttings(November/December): We begin to ship cuttings once the trees are dormant and in a shippable state. Exact timing is weather dependent, but we usually start in November. Shipping continues throughout the winter and early spring. We stop shipping when the trees begin to break dormancy, normally around mid-March. **All non-rooted cuttings ship between November and March regardless of the date selected during checkout. Orders placed during our pre-sale period(October/November) will ship out first in November/December. If you are rooting your cuttings in the spring, our cuttings can be kept in the refrigerator until you are ready to root them. They will be perfectly fine. That is what we do and they've turned into our most impressive trees. Rooted Cuttings(Spring): We begin shipping rooted cuttings once they are mature enough to ship. The shipping period typically begins late April and continues into June. Regardless of the date you select during checkout, we will ship when ready during that span.
