Carnelian is an orange to reddish-brown variety of Chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of Quartz. Unlike the large visible crystals associated with materials such as Clear Quartz or Amethyst, the Quartz crystals within Chalcedony are microscopic. Yes. Carnelian is a variety of Chalcedony, which belongs to the wider Quartz family. The important difference is crystal size. Clear Quartz contains crystals that can develop into large visible forms, whereas the crystalline structure within Chalcedony is microscopic. Carnelian is therefore correctly associated with Quartz while having a noticeably different appearance from transparent Rock Crystal. What Gives Carnelian Its Orange Colour?
